Painting Prep Guide: 8 Steps for a Longer-Lasting Finish

A premium paint brand cannot compensate for poor preparation. Strong prep is what separates a quick cosmetic job from a finish that survives for years.

Step 1: Inspect the surface

Mark cracks, damp spots, powdering walls, and previous paint failures before any sanding starts.

Step 2: Repair and level

Use crack filler, putty, and sanding to create a uniform surface. Skipping this stage causes visible imperfections after painting.

Step 3: Prime correctly

Primer improves adhesion and color consistency. Different wall conditions may need different primer types.

Step 4: Protect surrounding areas

Mask switches, trims, and floors. Proper masking saves cleanup time and keeps edges sharp.

Step 5: Plan ventilation and drying time

Humidity, room airflow, and coat intervals directly impact final finish quality.

When done right, prep work gives cleaner color, stronger durability, and fewer touch-ups over time.
